This year, Slattery has been delighted to welcome 13 students into the program, with six cadets in Melbourne, four in Sydney and three in our Perth office. Students have come from Curtin University, The University of Melbourne, Deakin University, University of New South Wales, University of Technology Sydney, University of Newcastle and University of Western Sydney.

Director Mark Cathie who oversees the program noted, “The Slattery Student Program has gone from strength to strength since the inaugural program in 2016. The current cohort who come from seven universities from around Australia have all shown great aptitude and been of a high calibre overall. They’ve really added value during a very busy period.”

Every year, Slattery enables students who are studying or who have recently completed an AIQS accredited program in Australia to work within our national offices and gain valuable on-the job experience to round out their study programs.

Not only does it demonstrate the potential pathways they can take on completing university, it also highlights the many areas and alternate professions that a career in quantity surveying and construction economics crosses over with. It is a stimulating and diverse environment to work within.

During the four-week program usually held in February, students take on paid internships and work alongside a nominated mentor providing structured learning on real projects, and giving students exposure to Slattery’s business model – through site visits, technical training, design and clients meetings, business development activities and staff interaction.

For the Slattery team, now nearly 100 quantity surveyors nationally, working on a multitude of projects across diverse sectors including Commercial Office and Workplace, Education, Health and Aged Care, Justice and Transport ­ the cadets provide a fresh perspective to the projects at hand as well as being a very welcome resource during busy times.
