RMIT University’s new Capitol Theatre is one of Slattery’s favourite projects and has officially opened to the public. Carefully refurbished to restore and preserve many of the original features designed by renowned architects, Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin, the iconic theatre has plaster ceiling to evoke a crystalline cave and LED lights that can be synchronised to sound. The theatre intricates glass panels with giant pillars in the lounge areas along with carpet that was commissioned based on a fragment found in a cupboard.
Slattery has been delighted to work with RMIT University on the renewal of the 1924 theatre complex by developing cost plans and working closely with Six Degrees Architects, GHD and Hutchinson’s Builders.
The new transformation hosts 580 seats, with a widened stage and a state of the art digital projector enabling the theatre to be used as a place for culture and public events as well as offering a range of innovative teaching and research opportunities for students and staff.
The team at Slattery is excited to see future Melbournians experience the new theatre and how it will benefit students at RMIT.
