Capella Sydney

Slattery was engaged to provide full-cost services on the entire heritage-listed Sandstones Precinct (two buildings) in the heart of Sydney.

The Education Department Building is transforming into Capella Sydney, a 192-key premium luxury hotel, aiming for 6-star standards. The transformation of this seven-storey heritage building involves the addition of four levels above and excavation of three levels of basement to provide 192 hotel rooms averaging in size of 50sqm to suites up to 245sqm. The ground level will have various food and beverage offerings and six meeting and conference rooms.

Capella Sydney will offer guests an opportunity to visit for the first time in the buildings history and will provide amenities such as a luxury spa, observatory, and green courtyard – alongside stunning views.

The Lands Building features four levels with a clock tower and a glass-domed diagrid roof. A new subterranean tunnel link connects both buildings below street level. This building will be home to a restaurant and bar area with views of the Harbour Bridge.

This project presented enormous challenges and risks that our team had to mitigate and work through with the entire stakeholder group such as structural considerations for the new pool on level 5, and heritage preservation.
