Inner Sydney High School
Slattery were engaged to provide cost management services for the construction of this new vertical school for 1,200 students on the existing Cleveland Street Intensive English High School. The school caters for a predicted increase in urban growth anticipated in the Inner Sydney catchment area, to be constructed by December 2019 as a part of the Department’s Sydney City Schools Strategy. Refurbishment works are required for heritage listed buildings. There are also complex existing services constraints present on site. The project was subject to an International Design Competition, to be one of the State’s flagship high-rise public high schools and the budget has been a challenge from its early stages with resubmission of multiple business cases.
With an inadequate initial budget, it has undergone extensive value engineering and redesign throughout the project development. We have just undertaken a Health Check on this project with INSW. We will take these lessons and our benchmarking into any future vertical school environment, with key issues framed in our paper in Appendix C. Slattery’s services on this project commenced in 2015 and are ongoing. Through proactive, open and transparent cost management and project advice, the capital cost has stayed current and relevant.
